6 Common Things That May Cause Prayerlessness

The devil does not want us to pray effectively. He will seek to cause us to pray amiss, by setting up roadblocks and distractions. Our flesh does not want to pray. The writer of James tells us, “The flesh is against God.” Consider Jesus in the garden saying to his sleepy disciples, “The spirit (man) is willing but the flesh (man) is weak.” We must guard against these enemies of prayer that result in prayerlessness:

• Lack of knowledge. We don’t know God’s word. Therefore, we don’t know how to effectively pray.

• Laziness. Laziness will say, “I don’t feel like praying.” Even though, I slept all night I’m too tired to get up and pray. I had a long day and I just want to relax and watch t.v. every night.

• Luke-warmness. The writer of James says, “The effective and fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Luke-warmness will cause compromise in your faith thereby rendering your prayer ineffective.

• Hard-heartedness. If our heart has become hard, we may not even know we should pray. We are no longer sensitive to the Holy Spirit’s call to pray.

• Distractions. Distractions are things that often are not necessarily evil but serve in distracting us from God’s best to settle for good.

• Offenses. Unforgiveness masquerades as offense. We in church circles feel better when we say we have an offense against someone as opposed to saying I haven’t forgiven. The Bible is still clear. We must forgive each other even in offense. Unforgiveness and offense will block clear fellowship with God through prayer.

May a decision today to ask for the Holy Spirit’s help. He will help. This is one of the main reasons He was sent.
